Inhalt
This course will offer to students interested in the Ottoman Empire or the Age of Revolutions a survey of the Ottoman socio-politics in late 18th and early 19th century. The readings will include theoretical works on Enlightenment, Age of Revolutions and various political crises within the Ottoman Empire including the Ottoman-Russian War of 1768-1774, the Serbian Revolt of 1804-1813 and the Greek Revolution of 1821.Historiography is moving away from an understanding of the Age of Revolutions as an exclusively European and American phenomenon. Though still extremely valuable, the theses put forward by eminent historians such as Eric Hobsbawm, Robert Palmer or Franco Venturi are becoming outdated as Age of Revolutions is understood to be transnational and trans-imperial. The emphasis is no longer on democratization or on the foundation of nation-states. What occurred roughly between 1760 and 1830 is no longer seen as the inevitable collapse of empires or exploitative old regimes. The once obvious connection between Enlightenment and Revolution is no longer so clear. But what do we put in the place of the old narrative that was so simple and convincing?
This course is an attempt to include the Ottoman Empire in the debates about the Age of Revolutions. It aims to explore what the Age of Revolutions framework can add to the understanding of the Ottoman Empire and what Ottoman history can contribute to the discussion. An argument for the Ottoman participation in the Age of Revolutions must deal with several questions: How did the Ottomans participate in this transnational phenomenon if its terminology was foreign to the Empire? How can we go beyond the narrative of dormant nations looking for ways out of imperial yokes, especially since the Ottoman Empire was the foreign, imperial yoke par excellence of the Enlightenment authors themselves?
After discussions on the new historiography of the Enlightenment and the Age of Revolutions, the course will navigate late 18th and early 19th century Ottoman history. Focusing on the perceptions of local Muslim and Christian landowners, of Ottoman imperial officials including Christians and the prelates of the Orthodox Church of Constantinople, this course will bring forth the question of religion and religious difference in the transformation of a pre-modern state.
