Diese Übung ist Teil von Basismodul 01: Einführung. Sie wird - den Modellverläufen folgend - im Wintersemester in höherer Zahl angeboten; im Sommersemester wird nur eine kleine Zahl englischer Quellenlektüren durchgeführt. Bitte beachten Sie dies bei Ihrer Semesterplanung!

Michael Psellos (ca. 1018-1076) is one of the most important scholars and politicians in the Middle byzantine era. His literary oeuvre comprises philosophical, theological and scientific texts, court poetry and, most famously, his "Chronographia." In this work, Psellos, who was an active member of the Byzantine court, imperial councilor and tutor of imperial princes, provides a compelling account of the political history of Byzantium between 976 and 1078. Structured in the form of successive imperial biographies, the text is a central source for the turbulent history of the 11th century. 
In the seminar we are going to contextualize the author and his work in the sociopolitical context of the Middle Byzantine time. The main part is going to be the lecture and translation into German of selected chapters from Sewter's English translation.
