Kantor, Marvin: Medieval Slavic Lives of Saints and Princes. The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor 1983.Contents
At the beginning of the history of the Slavic peoples we find the lives of holy missionaries and holy princes. They established Christianity in the young realms and thus remain to this day, within the tradition of modern nations, as central figures of identification that have been subject to numerous interpretations. In this source reading course, students will read and translate into German the lives of Saints Constantine, Methodius, and Wenceslaus; Boris and Gleb; and, if time permits, the life of Stefan Nemanja—originally written in Old Slavonic—as translated by the American Slavicist Marvin Kantor, who was born in New York in 1934.
