Computing technology has radically influenced many aspects of everyday life since the 1960s. Some of the ideas that shaped the invention and further evolution of computing were developed in earlier days, well before the technologies themselves existed. Since computers started taking on an increasing role in daily life -- whether for work, entertainment or personal communication -- technologists have given significant consideration to their impact. This course explores computing and early networking from the 1940s to the 1990s with a focus on social and cultural dimensions. Alongside revisiting technical classics central to the development of computer technology that envisaged the benefits of computerisation, the course also highlights selected elements of the broader societal impact of computing and the cultures that developed around information technology. Most sessions combine a primary historical text or video with a secondary sources in English or German.
Requirements: active participation and giving a presentation on a topic in one of the sessions.
IMPORTANT: Good English skills are essential: much of the literature used in the course is in English.
