This seminar offers a source-oriented introduction to Italian historiography of the twelfth century, with a particular focus on the forms, functions, and narratives of violence. Drawing on key texts from communal chronicles (e.g. Otto/Acerbus Morena), imperial-associated historiography (e.g. Otto of Freising, Rahewin), and local annals (e.g. the Annals of Montecassino), as well as selected charters (especially from southern Italy), we will jointly analyze rhetorical strategies, modes of representation, and political contexts. The aim is to develop both a nuanced understanding of the source landscape of northern and southern Italy and methodological skills for the critical analysis of medieval narratives of violence. The seminar is intended for students with an interest in medieval studies, historiography, and cultural-historical approaches to the study of violence.Knowledge of Latin is advantageous for working with the sources in this seminar but is not a strict prerequisite, as translations can largely be provided.
