Contents

The exercise is thematically based on the main seminar “Legal Culture in Ancient Athens”. However, the focus here is on selected court speeches from the corpus of the “Attic Orators”, which we will work on together, primarily with regard to hermeneutic/methodological questions. These include methods for assessing the factual informational and discursive value of individual passages, the question of the authenticity of documents included in the manuscripts, or assessing the interaction between author, litigant and orator. In addition, the selected passages will provide ample opportunity for further research and discussions on the realities of Athenian law and the judicial system.
